1893 Stock Certificate - Globe Savings Bank Dearborn & Jackson Street in Chicago, Illinois For Sale

Authentic red serial-numbered xxxx stock certificate for the Globe Savings Bank located at the corner of Dearborn and Jackson Streets in Chicago IL. Several Chicago banks including this one were involved in a famous banking scandal in xxxx eerily similar to recent financial scandals today. Some banks made questionable loans and did not have enough money to cover all the loans they made. Some banking executives got caught diverting money for their own benefit. Angry sullen crowds mulled for hours around the front doors of closed banks and angry words flew fast from the hard-working immigrants from diverse backgrounds who entrusted their life savings to these banks, only to have it all disappear overnight. There was no FDIC to protect their money. Some committed suicide. Globe Savings Bank failed for good in Spring of xxxx, nearly wiping out the accounts of the University of Illinois.
Cerificate measures 8 X 10 1/4 inches and is hand-signed by company's cashier and by its president. A GLEAMING embossed gold seal citing company name, city and state appears in lower left corner. The graphic at top-center depicts a horizontal, expensive-looking spear mostly wrapped in a banner. The left side of the banner says "Globe" and the right side says "Bank". A large globe sits where the middle of the banner would be and the word "Savings" appears along the globe's tilted equator. The background for this graphic is a heavy cloud bank. Overall the document impressively uses shades of grey and black, including its grey and black border with pinwheels at each corner. The gleaming embossed gold seal accents the grey-black color scheme very effectively.
