Authentic xxxx memorandum on the letterhead of Camp-Fire Club of America, headquartered in New York City as the sister national organization of the Boy Scouts. Document features the organization name spelled out using forest-green colored foliage at top-center of document. Top-left of document displays the top four company officers, including Treasurer Edmund Seymour who hand-signs this document.
In xxxx, young girls in Thetford, VT watched their brothers and schoolmates ? all Boy Scouts ? practice their parts in the community's 150th anniversary, to be celebrated the following summer. The pageant's organizer, William Langdon, promised the girls that they, too, would have an organized role in the pageant, although no organization such as Boy Scouts existed then for girls. Langdon consulted with Mrs. Charles Farnsworth, principal of nearby Horace Mann School. Both approached Luther Halsey Gulick M.D. about creating a national organization for girls. Dr. Gulik and wife had already established a camp for girls in xxxx near Lake Sebago in Maine.
Gulick furthered the idea to his friends, among them James West (Boy Scouts executive secretary). After many discussions and help from the Gulick family, William Langdon organized the groups of Vermont and Maine girls to become the sister organization to the Boy Scouts of America known as the "Camp Fire Girls". To support the effort in xxxx, James E. West issued a press release from Boy Scouts of America headquarters announcing that with the success of the Boy Scout movement a group of preeminent New Yorkers were organizing a group to provide outdoor acitivites for girls, similar to those in the Boy Scout movement.
Camp Fire Girls of America incorporated in Washington, D.C, as a national agency on March 17, xxxx. By December xxxx, Camp Fire Girls' membership grew to 60,000, many of whom began attending affiliated summer camps. The first Camp Fire handbook published in xxxx. During World War I Camp Fire Girls helped to sell over one million dollars in Liberty Bonds and over $900,000 in Thrift Stamps; 55,000 girls helped to support French and Belgian orphans. Membership grew to 274,000 by xxxx in 1,300 U.S. communities. Camp Fire expanded to welcome boys to participate in all Camp Fire activities in xxxx when it became co-ed.
