Many modern-day prints imitate this popular xxxx World War 1 poster print, but an ORIGINAL xxxx print (such as this one) contains annotations in the lower left and right corners respectively. Lower left annotation is "No. 4-C" and lower right is "Forbes Boston". The artist's original work hangs in the Library of Congress.
Artist Howard Chandler Christy created a xxxx War poster to help the fundraising effort by the U.S. government, which opposed piling up national debt to finance a major war, so they used public relations campaigns to promote savings bonds and/or liberty bonds as a primary fund-raising tool to pay for World War 1.
Titled "Americans All", Christy portrayed an Honor Roll of fourteen American ethnic surnames to emphasize that America was a melting pot of "Americans All" united for one cause. To the left of the surnamed Honor Roll list stands a stoic female in sleeveless flowing gown with her left hand hanging a wreath above the Honor Roll to honor those who died in battle. A giant-sized American flag forms a backdrop behind the woman and accents her silhouette boldly against the rest of the poster, which is mostly soft-tinted earth tones. The bottom of the poster promotes Victory Liberty Loans in large, bold-blue lettering.
The poster print is contained by a thin, elegant gold metallic glassed frame, measures a sizable 27 X 40 inches and beautifully features the unique rich colors of early 20th century inks.
Incidentally World War 1 (xxxx-xxxx) resulted in the deaths of nine million soldiers (mostly Europeans), the highest death toll of any conflict in human history. America tried to remain neutral and resisted entering the war for as long as possible, but by xxxx public opinion slowly tilted in favor of entering the war due to mounting atrocites, including widespread use of mustard gas.
Even though airplanes and vehicles (including tanks) were employed in warfare for the first time, mostly these were crude machines. Airplanes' primarily value was to identify enemy movement and artillery fire, while combustion engine vehicles were slow and bulky. Thus the relative immobility of armies contributed to massive casualties as the sides mostly waged face-to-face combat on open fields, including even old-school bayonets affixed to rifles.
A young soldier named Adolph Hitler deeply resented the international consensus that Germany had both caused World War 1 and lost the War. So many other Germans shared this resentment that it fueled Hitler's ambitions that laid the groundwork for World War 2 some years later.
"If we do not end war, war will end us."---Herbert George Wells (English author)
