1927 Auction Notice - Bauer Taxicab Co. (529 S. Franklin St.) in Chicago, Illinois For Sale

xxxx auction notice pursuant to the bankruptcy auction of Bauer Taxicab Co. located at 529 S. Franklin St. in Chicago. Auctionerrs Michael Tauber and Co. conducted the auction. Local 727 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Chauffeurs Stablemen and Helpers launched a strike against Bauer during the fall of xxxx, which often turned violent with beatings of scab drivers and burnings of their taxicabs. The strike continued into November of xxxx when Mayor William Hale Thompson ordered the Chicago Police Department to enforce a recently enacted City Council ordinance mandating the bonding of all of the city's taxicab drivers. The legislation was implemented under Thompson's second administration and was likely influenced by one of Thompson's 'friends' which included John D. Hertz, the owner of the Yellow Cab Company.
The legislation effectively put many of the city's individual cabbies and small fleet operators out of business as they couldn't afford the additional financial burden imposed by the City's legislation. Bauer Taxicab Co. already teetered towards bankruptcy due to the already month-long strike of Bauer's 500 union cabbies, so that enforcement of the City legislation was the straw that broke their back. A major financier of Bauer Taxicab Co. named Murray B. Lauer, along with Bauer's gasoline and oil supplier Continental Oil Co. filed an arrearage legal motion against Bauer which led to the taxicab company's demise soon thereafter. Meanwhile, the Yellow Cab Company, primary benefactor of the legislation pushed through by the notoriously corrupt Mayor Thompson during the Capone era, is still the most viable taxicab service provider in Chicago 85 years later.
