1928 Pamphlet - Infant Welfare Society in Chicago, Illinois For Sale

Price: $12
Type: Art & Antiques, For Sale - Private.

This xxxx softcover pamphlet is 32 pages in very good condition without any rips or tears. The front cover contains a pencil mark and a thin light smudge. All the inside pages and the back cover are pristine.
The pamphlet is the 18th Annual Report of this children's advocate organization headquartered at 203 N. Wabash Ave. The front cover displays a sculpted bust of a mother cradling an infant in her arms; the inside pages feature several pages of pictures and a moving mission report by the organization's superintendant. The report also lists the organizational structure including 23 Chicago neighborhood outposts and staffing of such.
The object of the society was to reduce the infant death rate and improve the health of the coming generation by keeping the baby well before its birth (by caring for the mother) and after its birth (by teaching her how to feed and care for her child). The organization cared for over 16,000 pre-natals, infants and pre-schoolers in xxxx. Just 30 years prior, obstetric conditions were unimaginable. The best doctors refused to accept childbirth cases, and those who did were ignorant and careless. Hospitals had no maternity wards, so pregnant women shared space with infectious and ill patients. As a result, many mothers died of bed infections or became invalids for life, and many babies were injured or became permanently blind.
