Authentic xxxx memorandum on the letterhead of Bellevue Place Co., a sanitarium for disturbed ladies located in Batavia IL located in Kane County near Geneva. Letterhead features two exterior b/w photographs of the facility and one b/w photograph of the grounds.
Founded in xxxx by Dr. Richard J. Patterson, a renowned expert in the field of mental health, Bellevue Place housed 25-30 women at a time and advocated that peace, quiet, and gentleness were beneficial to the recovery of those who were mentally ill. Orchards and a vegetable garden provided a fresh supply of in season food for the institution. Around the grounds were flower beds, hammocks and lawn seats, which nurtured outdoor life and freedom. Perhaps its most prominent resident was Mary Todd Lincoln, who witnessed the assassination of Abe Lincoln, her husband.
Mary Todd Lincoln suffered from severe headaches throughout her adult life, as well as protracted depression. During her White House years, she also suffered a severe head injury in a carriage accident. A history of public outbursts throughout Lincoln's presidency, as well as excessive spending, has led some historians and psychologists to speculate that Mary suffered from bipolar disorder.
Following the death of two of her sons and her husband, Mrs. Lincoln endured the death of a third son (Thomas) in July xxxx which led to overpowering grief and increasingly erratic behavior which alarmed her only surviving son, a rising young Chicago lawyer named Robert Lincoln.
During a March xxxx visit to friends in Florida, Mrs. Lincoln became so unshakably convinced that Robert was gravely ill that she immediately traveled to Chicago to see him, but experienced delusional episodes along the way. Once in Chicago, she told her son (who was not ill at all) that someone tried to poison her on the train and that someone had stolen her pocketbook, but returned it later. After Mrs. Lincoln nearly jumped out of a window to escape a non-existent fire, her son determined that she should be institutionalized at Bellevue.
Soon thereafter, Ms. Todd, through a friend, engaged in a very public newspaper feud accusing her son of wishing to gain control of her assets. The feud both humiliated Robert and brought negative publicity upon Bellevue, leading to Mrs. Lincoln?s discharge from Bellevue (after about one hundred days) into the care and custody of her sister in Springfield IL.
