The international sugar market collapsed after WW1. By the time the Great Depression began, many sugar mills struggled (or were already bankrupt) in pre-Castro Cuba until sugar prices rose sharply in xxxx at the outbreak of WW2. During those two decades between wars, sugar producers strove to appease many thousands of increasingly resentful laborers, most of whom performed difficult work of cutting and hauling cane in oppressive heat for a meager wage.
Many Cubans blamed their squalid living conditions on backroom business deals between the U.S. and the Cuban ruling class which they believed unfairly and personally enriched "sugar men" and members of their own corrupt ruling class at the expense of exploitative labor performed by Cuban and Caribbean workers.
So egregious was the ruling class' worker exploitation that a group of non-commissioned military officers arrested their own superiors at an army base in Havana and took command of the island's military forces in what became known as the Cuban Revolution of xxxx. Before long many students joined the revolution and succeeded in purging the existing oppressive government with a new government whose tenets were founded on principles of socialism, nationalism and anti-imperialism aimed mostly at the United States.
In addition to dissolving the old political party machine, the new Cuban regime also invoked a series of new labor laws which improved the plight of its workers.
