1934 Memorandum - Baby Ruth Candy in Chicago, Illinois For Sale

Price: $12
Type: Art & Antiques, For Sale - Private.

xxxx authentic business memorandum printed on the letterhead of the "Curtiss Candy Company" located at 622 Diversey Parkway in Chicago. Hand-signed by company president Otto Schnering. Document contains a colorless embossed company seal below Schnering's signature in lower-right corner.
The splashy graphic at top-center of document features a diamond blue shape stating "5 cents". Depictions of Butterfinger, Buy Jiminy, Baby Ruth and Easy Aces candy bars surround the "5 cents" sign. A black Baby Ruth sign with white lettering sits atop the "5 cents" sign, and a rectangular box containing indicative company information sits beneath the "5 cents" sign. The full graphic appears against a background pattern that resembles an orange flyswatter.
Although the Baby Ruth candy bar sounds like the name of the famous baseball player Babe Ruth, the Curtiss Candy Company traditionally claimed that it was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland. The candy maker named the bar "Baby Ruth" in xxxx, as Babe Ruth's fame was on the rise, over 30 years after Cleveland had left the White House and 17 years after his daughter, Ruth, had died. The company did not negotiate an endorsement deal with Ruth, and many saw the company's story about the origin of the name to be a devious way to avoid having to pay the baseball player any royalties.
Document is in Excellent condition except for two hole punches (near the top edge) and seven alpha-numeric characters in an empty area near the right edge which do not detract from the document. Suitable for framing. Measures 8 3/8 X 10 7/8 inches.
