1967 First Space Walk Stamps (Full Sheet) in Chicago, Illinois For Sale

Issued in xxxx, this is full sheet of genuine five-cent U.S. postage stamps in a pane of 5 columns X 10 rows to commemorate the U.S. Gemini Space Mission program begun in early xxxx after building upon the successes of Project Mercury. Gemini's primary objectives were to test both equipment and procedures that would be essential for the upcoming Apollo Moon missions. The Gemini IV mission included the first spacewalk (extravehicular activity) by an American astronaut, Edward White. Later flights accomplished and perfected rendezvous and docking of two separate space craft components. .
The Post Office commissioned designer Paul Calle to design the stamp. Calle developed a pair of complementary (twin) stamps, marking the first time the United States printed attached stamps that blend into a single complete design, with the right stamp showing the Gemini 4 space capsule with the Earth's horizon as a backdrop, while the left stamp showed astronaut Ed White making the first American spacewalk.
Calle purported NOT to intend for his design to represent any living person, since it was against Post Office regulations to do so on a U.S. postage stamp design. However, the equipment in the image made it evident that he had used NASA's photographs from the Gemini IV mission. Controversy erupted as some demanded a commemorative stamp honoring the three astronauts who had recently died at the beginning of the Apollo I program during takeoff . However, the Post Office rejected this idea, as other astronauts had died without commemoration, and thousands of soldiers were still losing their lives during the Vietnam conflict.
