Type: Art & Antiques, For Sale - Private.

Full sheet of Marquette stamps in pane of 5 columns X 10 rows. Honoring the seventeenth century explorer Father Jacques Marquette, these 6-cent stamps were issued September xxxx at Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, where he established in xxxx the oldest permanent settlement in that state. In late xxxx, Father Marquette and his party became the first Europeans to winter in what would become the city of Chicago. In spring of xxxx, Marquette died at age 38 near the modern town of Ludington, Michigan after illness sapped his health when he contracted a bout of dysentery during the Mississippi expedition. He had been returning to his mission at St. Ignace which he had left in xxxx to embark on such expedition.
The stamp features a canoe with four people in it, including Marquette and one believed to be Louis Jolliet (commonly spelled Joliet in United States), a French Canadian explorer and Jesuit priest born in Beaupr? near Quebec City, Canada. The front and rear persons completing the foursome appear to be rowers with oars in the water. Marquette and Jolliet sailed the Mississippi River in mid-July xxxx reaching the mouth of the Arkansas River, far enough south to prove it flowed into the Gulf of Mexico, rather than the Pacific Ocean.
Stamp sheet is in mint condition with no flaws or imperfections. Suitable for framing, especially along a hallway or stairway of your home.
