Full sheet of John Trumbull American Artist six-cent stamps in pane of 10 columns X 5 rows. The 6-cent John Trumbull postage stamp, the eighth in the annually issued American Painting Series, was first placed on sale in xxxx, at New Haven, Connecticut. The stamp features a detail from the painting "The Battle of Bunker Hill," which is held in the Yale University collection. Mint condition. No flaws or imperfections.
The stamp was printed in muted tones of yellow and red, applied by offset, with black added by the Giori press. Lieutenant Grosvenor, wearing yellow breeches, white blouse, dark jacket, and dark plumed hat, holds a sword in his left hand because his right hand has received a wound. Peter Salem, in red breeches, stands behind the officer. He holds a flintlock aloft. In the background is the haze of battle, with smoke rising over Boston Harbor.
John Trumbull (xxxx-xxxx) was a revolutionary patriot and artist commemorated on this stamp and who became known for his dramatic recording of many Revolutionary War scenes and events. He graduated from Harvard College and enrolled in the Continental Army, serving as an aide to George Washington. After the American Revolution, he studied painting in London under artist Benjamin West. The designs of several U.S. postage stamps have been based on Trumbull's paintings, especially stamps depicting George Washington.
