Full sheet of xxxx-issued Law and Order six-cent commemorative stamps in array of 10 columns X 5 rows. Stamp features image of a Policeman in full uniform holding the hand of a young lad carrying a school book as they walk together. Designed by Edward Vebell, this sheet is in mint condition with no flaws or imperfections.
The intent of the stamp was to reinforce a positive public relations image of law enforcement officials with the communities they served at a time when social unrest rocked the nation. Since policemen were the ones generally assigned to maintain crowd control and to prevent anarchy during massive protest demonstrations, the Law and Order stamp was designed to honor policemen as protectors and friends of the people, as well as to encourage respect for the law. But 101 days after the stamp was issued, a massive Grant Park protest to coincide with the Democratic National Convention erupted into violence in Chicago as the whole world watched on television.
Some loudly criticized the Chicago Police Department for using heavy-handed tactics to quell the protest, but Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley claimed to have received 135,000 letters supporting the police actions and only 5,000 condemning them. Public opinion polls demonstrated that the majority of Americans also supported the Police tactics. Unfortunately Mayor Daley did not help matters when he spoke his legendary gaffe: "The Police Are Not Here To Create Disorder, They're Here To Preserve Disorder"
