Postcard (1917) - Camp Logan WW1 Army Training Camp (Houston TX) in Chicago, Illinois For Sale

Price: $9
Type: Art & Antiques, For Sale - Private.

Postcard bears an original U.S. stamp with a xxxx postmark from World War I-era army training camp named Camp Logan in Houston Texas (which is America's fourth most populated city today). In xxxx, black soldiers at the camp were involved in the Houston Riot, a riot triggered by the belief that a fellow soldier was being unfairly incarcerated in the city of Houston.
Besides the original stamp with xxxx postmark, the front of the postcard bears a soldier's handwritten message to a loved one in Chicago. The back side of the postcard bears a pre-printed color image of a soldier in full uniform sitting cross-legged on the ground and writing a letter. On the right side is a pre-printed Christmas greeting. The top corners of the postcard each display a Christmas wreath adorned with a pink ribbon. Between the wreaths is a panoramic skyline view of the structures comprising Camp Logan.
Today some chunks of concrete, many building foundations, and extensive trenches used for training still remain in the heavily-forested Memorial Park that once was Camp Logan's site. Many of the trails through the park in this area trace the routes of old Camp Logan roads. One stretch of a Camp Logan road remains in original condition, that being the shell-surfaced service road to the golf course.
Postcard measures 3 1/4 X 5 1/2 inches and is in Good condition. The postcard's cardboard is a bit faded from age and one corner is a bit frayed, but the soldier's handwritten message is still entirely legible and there are no other flaws or imperfections.
