See Part 1 ad for lead-in to "Chicago Banks" back story. Part 2 continues below.
As Chicago grew into a world-class city, did you know there was a time when Chicago banks could open only one facility with NO branch banking allowed (and of course no ATM machines)? All outlying neighborhood banks had to be new banks, each operating independently without the efficiency of one main parent bank with centralized management.
Did you also know that just prior to President Roosevelt's creation of FDIC in xxxx to protect bank savings accounts, we endured the Chicago Banking Crisis of xxxx? Beginning with the October 24, xxxx stock market crash through the end of xxxx, about 40% of banks went out of business. Some got merged into stronger banks in order to survive, but others shut their doors overnight without paying off their account holders, causing panic, anger and even suicide among Chicagoans who lost their savings. .
But there was more than meets the eye than just the stock market crash and the Great Depression. Bankers' massive insider abuse, weak government regulatory oversight and corrupt elected officials who looked the other way when they knew something was wrong and who got kickbacks from their banker cronies while those same bankers swindled bank assets with questionable and fraudulent loans all contributed significantly to the Chicago Banking Crisis.
This ad features authentic (mostly) pre-xxxx Chicago bank business memorandums on vintage letterheads. All measure roughly the same size (10 7/8 X 8 3/8 inches) and all are in Very Good condition. See "Part 1 of 2" ad for list of first 29 vintage letterheads.
