The legacy of Marshall Field lives forever thanks to the Marshall Field Memorial Statue located in Graceland Cemetery (Chicago) and produced by Chas. G. Blake & Co.
The statue also appears on the vintage xxxx letterhead of Blake's company, whose main operations yard was located at 67th & Ellis Ave. complementing his main business office at 723 Woman's Temple, a beautiful building located on southwest corner of LaSalle & Monroe Streets before its xxxx demolition.
Charles Blake was born in Devonshire England before his family emigrated to the United States in the late xxxx's to settle on the East Coast when Blake was age three. As a youth, Blake worked for a Rhode Island granite company who transferred him to Chicago at age 19. On his own volition, Blake pursued his education at the Art Institute of Chicago and settled down in Morgan Park before Chicago annexed that neighborhood as part of the City in xxxx.
Blake aspired to become a businessman and started a granite manufacturing business renowned for its cemetery headstones, mausoleums, statues and Celtic crosses. After selling its first headstone in xxxx, his company's granite sculpture reputation grew nationwide, such that his company completed special orders for giant stone water fountains, lion heads and gargoyles carved in granite. Blake also served as a Director of Calumet Trust & Savings Bank and held membership in the Chicago Stock Exchange.
After three decades attending to his business, Blake turned over day-to-day operations to his brother in order to devote more time to his passion as an amateur artist using the training and talent cultivated from his days at the Art Institute.
