Pablo Picasso (xxxx-xxxx) completed somewhere between 13,500 and 20,000 paintings in his lifetime. Picasso gets homage in an early scene of the movie "Titanic" when evil Cal observes his fiance Rose (Kate Winslet) unloading a couple "ugly" Picasso paintings from her luggage on board the ship and tells Rose that "Nothing will ever become of him".
No painter or sculptor, not even Michelangelo, has been as famous as Picasso in his own lifetime. He was a superstitious, sarcastic man, sometimes rotten to his children, often beastly to his women. He had contempt for women artists. His famous remark about women being "goddesses or doormats" rendered him odious to feminists, but other women eagerly fell for his legendary charm and mythological virility.
Picasso was married twice and had four children by three women, but maintained a number of mistresses in addition to his wife or primary partner. After his xxxx marriage to ballerina Olga Khokhlova, the two had one son together but lived in constant conflict due to a clash between his bohemian tendencies and her social propriety. In xxxx at age 46 Picasso began a secret affair with 17-year-old Marie-Therese Walter, causing his marriage with Olga to end in separation rather than divorce, as French law required an even division of property in the case of divorce, and Picasso did not want Olga to gain half his wealth. (Olga died in xxxx as still legally married to Picasso.) Picasso fathered a daughter with Marie-Therese during their affair which lasted until late xxxxs. It was during his tumultuous xxxx's and '30s when Picasso produced some of the scariest distortions of the human body and the most violently irrational, erotic images of Eros and Thanatos ever committed to canvas. Photographer-painter Dora Maar became Picasso's lover and constant companion in the late xxxx's and early xxxxs.
After the xxxx Paris liberation, Picasso kept company with young art student Françoise Gilot. The two eventually became lovers and had two children together. Unique among Picasso's women, Francoise left Picasso in xxxx, allegedly because of abusive treatment and infidelities, which dealt a severe blow to Picasso's psyche as he struggled to come to terms with his .
advancing age and his perception that, now in his seventies, he was no longer attractive, but rather grotesque to young women. A number of ink drawings from this period explore this theme of the hideous old dwarf as buffoonish counterpoint to the beautiful young girl, including several from a six-week affair with Geneviève Laporte, who much later in June xxxx auctioned off the drawings Picasso made of her.
Soon after, Picasso began a long relationship with 27-year old Jacqueline Roque who worked at the Madoura Pottery where Picasso made and painted ceramics. Meanwhile Francoise fervently sought a legal means to legitimize her two children with Picasso, so with Picasso's blessing and encouragement, Francois divorced her then-husband (Luc Simon) in order to marry Picasso in order to secure her children's inheritance rights. Picasso (now age 80) then exacted revenge upon Francois for leaving him by secretly marrying Jacqueline (now age 34) in xxxx right after the Francois divorce became final (ironic because the philandering Picasso had previously left so many relationships).
Picasso and Jacqueline remained together for the rest of his life until his death in France in xxxx as he and his wife had dinner with friends. Picasso's final words were "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink any more.", which Paul McCartney later immortalized in song. Jacqueline, who prevented Picasso's two children borne by Francois from attending the funeral, committed suicide with a gun thirteen years later.
This like-new idyllic black-and-white Picasso print measures 38 X 27 inches and spans to 44 X 33 inches inside its beautiful, hearty black frame which adds a pleasing fullness to the presentation and complements the large print perfectly. Hanging wire attached in back; ready to hang.
