Imagine that you are a single female walking down the sidewalk of a narrow cobblestone street in Italy in xxxx. Imagine that you are not dressed provocatively. You wear a loose-fitting high-neck blouse, a skirt below the knees, no pantyhose and flat sandals. You even have a shawl tossed across one shoulder and carry a bag from a nearby store. Suddenly you pass 15 men on a short stretch of sidewalk, and all 15 of them leer at you as you walk by with your eyes straight ahead.
Does it sound like sexual harassment? Photographer Ruth Orkin insists that it was not. She was a single female traveling alone in Europe when she met another single female traveling alone while in Italy. They became fast friends and agreed to do this photo shoot. Orkin maintains that the scene was not staged. She says that she told the guys that her friend would be approaching on foot in a minute and asked them to act naturally without looking at the camera while Orkin stood across the street. She said the guys were very courteous, and the two young women were just having fun.
Apparently the men did not have any urge to look at the camera anyway, because even though Orkin's friend was not dressed provocatively, she was very attractive, and all 15 pairs of eyes glued on her. The result was this iconic photograph titled Ruth Orkin - American Girl in Italy xxxx.
