Moog Modular IP with Sequencer
Here's a lovely and extraordinarily rare Moog that's been in suspended animation.
Purchased from original Midwest owner in xxxx, kept in smokeless studio in Alaska since then. I got to play this with a Theremin for Bob Moog when he came up to the University of Alaska in xxxx.
Some features of this time traveller -
Original Tolex and hardware complete with covers and every single original screw.
It looks like it's probably the original Power cord, for crying out loud.
Here's what this 1P has -
950 keyboard
Original Ribbon controller
901 1 Voltage Controlled Oscillator
901A 1 Oscillator Controller
901B 2 Oscillator
902 2 Voltage Controlled Amplifier
903A 1 Random Signal Generator
904A 1 Voltage Controlled Low-Pass Filter
905 1 Reverberation unit
907 1 Fixed Filter Bank
910 1 PSU
911 2 Envelope Generator
950 1 Keyboard Controller
956 1 Ribbon controller
991 1 Filter / attenuator panel
994 1 Jack multiples panel
Panel No. 3 2 Each including: Four I/P Mixer with +/- and - output jack multiples, Attenuator, 2 trunk lines and CV switches
Panel No. 4 1 Including: CV switches, attenuator, trigger & envelope routing switches and 3 CV & trigger outputs
Panel No. 8 1 Power switch
But that's a stock 1P. Here's what I installed a few years after the purchase using the pre-wired sequencer power harness -
960 sequencer
961 sequencer interface
962 sequential switch
So that makes this a sweet electric music box. It's got everything you need to be all Tangerine Dreamy.
Currently there is also a 3rd Don Martin-era oscillator (installed but not wired) in the photograph. I'll be removing it and replacing it with the random signal generator that was originally in that location. Unless I can't find it, in which case you get the extra oscillator. But I'm pretty sure I'll find it, so you're looking at a two oscillator box
.
This machine is all original, old and could use a knowledgeable hands to tame it. Or not, depending on your desire for vintagey Moogy-ness and grit. Most real modular guys are always sticking their faces into the guts and tweaking. It's never needed a repair as long as I've owned it. Some pots are scratchy but recover with use. It's not used up, it's just been dormant for a very, very long time. The keyboard could use a contact bath, but you'll notice it's the straightest set of keys anywhere. The 1/4" inputs could use a brushing, but again, that's what makes this an all-original machine. The ribbon controller works but again could use some TLC and contact cleaner. It's a little ragged and the original owner did some veneer fixing with tape. The original screws have a little oxidation, but so do you. It's probably in better shape than your teeth. All of the sequencer bulbs are working, there are a few others that need replacing.
Some Moogy considerations -
Oscillator stability - When I used to play it I left in on and found it to be very stable, even overnight. It behaves and sounds very much like a Moog, because, well, it is.
The Moog oscillators through the mixer into the filter through the reverb have an unmistakeable sound. There is an extra harmonic funk that that particular path has that absolutely nothing has been able to approach ever again. And the nice thing about voltage control is that you can run this from external voltage control and nobody will be the wiser - you will have all the precise pitch and filter control you want and the wonderfully delicious soup of a modular Moog in your track without having to touch the panel.
